Analysing music video using Goodwin.

Professor Green ft. Emeli Sande - 'Read all about it'

Visual + Lyrics:
The first visual lyric I noticed was when he says "to be, I'm exactly what my neck say's". At which point, the raper Green, turns to the side to show the camera what is on his neck, a tattoo saying 'Lucky'. A few seconds later he starts talking about family and the visuals is of a kid looking into a families house, which we later discover is his dad's house, staring at his dad's partner and thier daughter. The lyrics read "family is something that you've never been to me'. As the kid is looking at his dad's partner and daughter, its telling us that he hasn't got on with them as she isn't his real mum. "Making it harder for me to see my father" is the next lyric, which is said when the video shows the step-mum noticing the kid (her partners son) at the window. The lyrics along with the visuals there then help the audience to acknowledge the relationship between the two of them.
After the second chorus the lyrics are about his dad, this is when, in the video, his dad comes out to get him and takes him inside but doesn't want his partner to see them together. "the only thing was i never saw enough of you" is the lyric when it shows the kid going to hold his dad's hand and smiling while doing so. This is showing that he misses his dad and the lyrics help explain this more.
Another main part between visuals an lyrics is when the chorus comes on for the 5th time, its a calmed down version but it says "I want to sing, I want to shout, I want to scream till the words dry out" and the visual is of a close-up of the kid screaming with his eyes shut and hands over his ears. This is a very clear connection between the lyrics and visuals.

Visuals + Music:
The chorus at the start has been done so it is less intense as there is less music to aid the lyrics. This has been shown in the cuts as they are longer shots of the singers and of the house in the story side to the video. It then cuts to Professor Green the second the verse starts and he speaks so that it is in time with the music. The verse has a quicker beat to it, so the editing picks up the pace too. Each shot is shortened to fit in time with the music.
Through out the video, the chorus is edited so the clips last longer and the cuts aren't as often apart from the second to last chorus (the 5th). The clips are cut faster to match the music as this chorus is more intense than the others, but also there is more action going on in the visuals. The kid is throwing bits around in a room because he is angry, so his mood can also be reflected in the clips.

Genre Characteristics:
This genre is hip-hop/rap so you would expect to see maybe a few dancers around the rapper/singer to make them look better but in this video it isn't the case. The rapper is shown in a big warehouse, which shows him as being isolated. This is mainly to do with what the song is about, which is to do with his parents not being there for him, he is alone. Quite a few hip-hop/rap videos don't often show a story to it either, it just cuts from the artist singing to kind of random clips. This however is showing a story that is linked to the lyrics, which emphesises what the artist is trying to get across to the audience, as he is telling the audience via both hearing and sight.

Demands of the Label:
There are loads of close-ups, mid-shots and long-shots of the artist but less variation on the featuring artist. This is mainly because she is the featuring artist and not the main artist. This is good as it is selling both the artists. There isn't any obvious product placement and the artists and the actors are wearing fairly plain, with not obvious branding or logos.

Intertextuality:
The style that Professor Green has achieved when rapping is similar to that of a few of Eminem's videos, he is alone in a big empty space. Also the beginning shot where Green is stood infront of the beam of light through the crack in the massive hanger doors seems familiar from a film of some sort but i can't remember what film it was. It seems like an effect that has been done before though.

Voyeurism:
There isn't a lot of voyeurism in this music video as it isn't the kind of song that would have much in. There is some due the the artist and featuring artist being in the video but they aren't being objectified.

analysing music video with goodwin

'My First Kiss' by 3OH!3 ft Ke$ha

In this music video, we are shown many different links between the lyrics and visuals, one of the lines read 'no more books' which at the moment they shown on of the singers pushing books out of a womans hand. This shows the singers excitement about school being finished.

Another line mentions a car, which in this shot we are shown another singer with a woman stood infront of a car. This shows that even though he is stood with his girlfriend he is more interested in the car as that is what he is singing about.

There is also a link between the music and visuals as when either the shot or viewpoint change, it cuts on the beat. At the start of the video, whilst the chorus is playing the lyrics 'my first kiss went a little like this' we are shown close up's of many different peoples lips, this is a link between music and visuals.

Through out the video, the singers sing into the camera while doing other things, for example when they are dancing together they would be looking at the camera screen which shows notions of looking. This makes the video feel more personal and as though the artists are singing towards the audience which makes us feel more involved in the video.

This video shows sterotypical conventions of a pop video, the colours are all very bright and colourful, the location changes often to keep young audiences interested. The fact that they are singing about 'my first kiss' and 'no more school' reinforces their target audience as teeanagers.

Plan for the filming day!

Me and Charlotte are going to meet in Bishops Stortford around 12pm, and going to buy the food/supplies as props for our video. We are then going to go back to charlottes to get changed and sort the supplies and meeting some of charlottes friends which will be participating in the filming. We are then travelling to the location, which is a few minutes today and meeting the others there. We will then be setting the area up and starting the filming :)

Shooting day comments

Before filming we were quite worried that we would not have enough people to make the filming and idea successful as we thought that a big group of people would look and have a more effective feel in the video. On the day of filming we had 10 people participating, and we actually found this amount to be ideal. This was because we realised that a smaller group would look more effective as it would portray a close group of friends. We also thought that it would also allow us to focus on specific actions and get more involved in the general action in the video.

We also found that when Me and Charlotte were shopping for food/supplies that we were going to use as props in the video that we did not need as much as anticipated. We brought a range of food that we did include in our food list e.g. ketchup, beans, doughnuts, cherryade etc. but cut the amounts down as we did not feel that we would need as much. This was because we did not have as many people as anticipated participating in the filming and also because we generally thought that the amount that we originally wrote down was too much.

The weather was a really good point about the filming as it was a really nice and sunny day, and this worked in our favor. We were really pleased that it was a sunny day because our ideas for our video were very much based around a summery feel in order to emphasise the happy, and summery day atmosphere which we wanted to portray.

Location change.

One of our group members did a location recce of the area that we were planning to use for our music video in preparation for shooting on Sunday 16th. Upon traveling and visiting the location she found that it would be slightly unsuitable due to the distance to travel for all of the people involved in filming. We have therefore changed the location to somewhere closer for everybody to travel to. It is also a better choice of location as it is nearer to the supermarket where we will be buying our props from and it is more enclosed for more privacy.

Here is a picture of the new location that we are using for our music video. The area has been highlighted in red.

Analysing the Lyrics to We're From Barcelona

These are the lyrics to our music video, we will learn them for our music video which covers Goodwins theory.

The lyrics and visuals link very well throughout our music video, as the song is all about friends. Our idea all focuses on a friendship on a day out together this allows the story to lead very well throughout the music video. The beat of our song is strong and there are many different sections of the song which allows us to cut on the beat very well. Our concept and genre falls perfectly in this song.

Digipak and Magazine Ideas

For our digipack and magazine we have a few ideas which we will trial and error on the day of filming. We are currently unsure of what ideas we will use for which so we are posting all of our ideas as one and will decide upon getting the images needed and what suits which one.

Idea 1

We will have people together laughing, having fun and caught in the moment in order to show the energy and enjoyment of the picnic.

Idea 2

We will have spaghetti hoops and arrange these to create words, and state the title of the song in these. This idea is quite interesting and quirky and may work well with our idea.

Idea 3

We would have an action shot from the picnic/food fight and the title of the song written on somebodys t-shirt in food (ketchup, whipped cream). We could also use this idea with lots of people in which they would have one or two letters written on the back of their t-shirts.

Idea 4

Another idea would be to have lots of people spelling out the title of the song, using their bodies as letters. This could look really cool and quirky, and fit in with the genre/style of our song.

Idea 5

We could have lots of people holding up letters written on bits of paper which spell out the song. This could also look really quirky.

Mise-En-Scene Research

Location:
We are going to be shooting our music video in a field just west of Bishop Stortford.

Colour:
There will be lots of green due to us being in a field and near a forest. We will try to keep all the colours quite summery as we want to give the impression of a summer picnic.

Lighting:
We will be shooting in the daylight so we will just be using natural light. We may be shooting a bit into the evening but still no artificial light will be needed.

Costume:
People will be wearing quite plain clothes as they won't want to get their nice clothes messy in the food fight. For example, a plain t-shirt and boardies or jeans.

Props:
Here is a list of props that we will need in order to film our music video:

  • Several Picnic blankets,
  • Food - doughnuts,
  • Drink - cheap fizzy drinks, champagne/alcohol?
  • Bubble wand,
  • Water pistols,
  • Small paddling pool,
  • Inflatable beach balls,
  • Snorkels and flippers,
  • Water baloons,
  • Colourful umbrellas,
  • Portable stereo?
  • Sunglasses,
  • Spare change of clothing?
  • Swimwear?
  • Pineapple?

The Vaccines.

Some of The Vaccines videos have the hazy effect that we want to use in our music video. This gives it a sunny chilled out image and also makes it seem quite warm. We want our music video to seem like a warm summers day, so if it is overcast it will still appear a warm summers day.

We also really liked their layed back feel throughout the videos, this made the video feel really natural.

Music Video Inspiration

When thinking of our ideas for our music video to the track Were from Barcelona we looked at Noah and the Whale and there quirky and interesting music videos as each of us really liked them and we thought that  they would give us some inspiration. From this video we really liked the upbeat feel that the characters gave off by their quirky actions and expressions. We also really liked the hazy/summery effect that the video had as this gave it an old fashioned and also fun and upbeat feel to the video and we think that an effect like this would work really well in our music video. We will therefore experiment with this kind of effect in our music video when editing.

Music Video Project Timeline

Analysing Katy B's promo image - Artist construction task

Katy B

Dark coloured clothes and leather represents her to be quite rebellious. From this promotional photo she comes across as an R&B artist. Her clothing style is quite individual which is symbolic of her music style. Her natural look could help her to appeal to a young audience. The general colours used in the image are quite plain and neutural and this could suggest that she is an artist that could appeal to wide range of audiences.

The music video definitely demonstrates genre characteristics due to the location being a gig venue/club and props like dj decks etc used and the artist seen interacting with these things.

With the relationship between lyrics and visuals you could argue that there is and isn’t a relationship. It could be suggested that there is due to the lyrics describing an energetic club atmosphere and the visuals showing a venue and crowds of people. On the other hand you could argue that the lyrics and visuals don’t relate due to the artist relating to herself in the lyrics whereas in the visuals she is the one performing the song, and not experiencing the energetic atmosphere of the club as much as those in the crowd. There are close ups of the artist singing, and also long shots of her performing on stage, her performing recurs across her other work.
