Preparation for music artist poster.

As a group, we have decided to go for a expressive image, we have chosen different aspects of style from the music industry (clothing, hair, make up) and mixed them all together to become a new original look. We decided that experimenting would make a bold statement to the audiences in which we wish to target.

The one Artist will be framed in a mid shot, showing the top of her dress and her facial expression. This shows the chosen genre as Dance-Pop, to express this we are dressing the artist in a black, lacey and studded dress to give of the impression of a rock chick. To contrast her facial expression will suggest a more girly, cheeky look.  The artist will have very bold make up which will make her stand out from the crowd.  She will have dark grey eyes with a more natural face,  with some red lipstick to contrast.

For the location we have decided to use a green screen, which will allow us to experiment with the background later on. We were thinking about quite a plain background with a bright lighting background to emphasise the styling of the artist in the image but still add an experimental and unique factor to the image.

The artist will have big, backcombed hair, to compliment the ‘rock chick’ image, and she will have a few small plaits in her hair to soften the look. We looked at Kesha to get this kind of styling as we thought her hair is a good starting point for the look we want to create.

Storyboard For We're in Barcelona.

Artist and Music Video Research.

I'm From Barcelona

I'm From Barcelona is a mixed gender group of 20 people from Sweden. The group formed in the summer of 2005 when Emanuel Lundgren, the current lead vocalist of the group, recorded some newly written pop songs on his vacation. He gathered all his friends in the city of Jönköping, Sweden to take part and before he knew it had formed the biggest band in Sweden.

This is the song we are doing but it isn't the official video. We couldn't get the official video on here due to technical difficulties, it has to be a youtube video to go on the blog but the official video is vevo.

This is some images of things we will have in our music video.

Location Recee

Here is a birds eye view image of the location in which we are going to shoot our music video in. The location is an area of 3 fields which are different to each other in order to give us a variety of shots if some get boring in the same location. One is a field with lots of trees, one is a simple field, and the last is a field with a lake and raised land/hills. The 3 fields are highlighted with the red pen.

Keep Grow Change Task

I really enjoyed the music video process as I thought it was a really fun, interesting and challenging experience and way to introduce us to the A2 course. Music is a love of mine and due to the project being based on music I felt that I was able to feel more creatively engaged with the project, and enjoy it more.
With my group we decided to create our music video to the song Someone Like You by Adele out of the 6 choices. We chose this track as we had thought up an idea that we decided worked the best both with the creative and technical side of the project and expectations within it. The Adele track was used as we felt that our creative of idea of telling a story through the video would be more engaging to the audience and suitable for the type of song. We also felt that we could achieve the shots we needed more successfully and realistically for the Adele track using the college grounds than the other song choices.
The filming of the video was fun and well organised. We got all of the shots we needed in the small time scale that we had by us being organised. The quality of the majority of the shots was fairly good also. Unfortunately some of the shots were unusable to minor mistakes due to rushing as there was not much time left. We also had suitable locations planned and props we needed at the ready as a positive.
Editing was fairly successful as we managed to (just!) complete our video in time. The cuts used and lip synching quality was good and looked very effective.
I did however feel that teamwork was a slight downfall within the group in terms of editing and some filming. I felt that some of the team including me did not get enough chance to do the editing/filming and practice the skills. This was also partly due to the time scale that we had. On that note I would say that the music video process went successfully and was an interesting and exciting experience, but more planning was needed in order to organise everything and make sure that there were no problems/failures along the way.

VMA's best male video of the year award analysis

VMA Best Male video nomination category analysis
Justin Bieber – U Smile
The video does demonstrate genre characteristics common in music videos by the artist being shown playing the piano whilst singing which links into the music. This shows that the artist it passionate about music, his interests and musical skills and also development as an artist.
The link between the visuals and lyrics is shown through the artist and a female together in the video. The lyrics tell the story/talk about the artists relationship with this female and are expressed through both of their actions and facial expressions during this.

Bruno Mars – Grenade
There is a relationship between the music and visuals particularly with the use of a piano as the artist is shown pulling a piano across a city as part of the story line. The piano is again heard within the music of the track.
There is also a relationship between lyrics and visuals as the song talks about how the artist would do anything for his lover, and within the song shows this (to some extent).

Eminem ft. Rihanna – Love the way you lie
There is a very strong relationship between lyrics and visuals in this video where almost everything which is mentioned in the lyrics is shown/represented visually.
There is also a relationship between the music and visuals with the use of editing where the editing techniques and also actions of characters/artists in the video are linked in with the pace of the music and song.

Keep Grow Change Task.

Keep , grow, change

In our music video from the summer a few things worked well, I think that the cuts of either location or shots were done with the beat of the music so it allowed the music video flow and it made the viewer easier to follow.  Another thing that worked well was the fades at appropriate times of the video, for example the video ends with a fade out which worked well with the lyrics as the singer and her ex leave on bad terms.  We used zooms both in and out at times, in which the singer felt most emotional to amplify her emotions and how the lyrics emphasize them.

If we had more time to work on this task I think a change of location would have worked a lot better as there isn’t many changes in location. Also more shot times and cuts during the end of the video as it seems to drag on and become a little boring when the shot stays the same and in the same location especially as there is not much going on in front of the camera. I think the video would have benefited from having another character, maybe the singers ex boyfriend with another woman holding hands and having a good time. This could have been a flashback in the singers mind so it could be shown in the way of a montage, which shows the singer just wants to forget about it and get over her ex, even though she’s finding it hard.

This year I’d like to improve the variety of shots in the video and as a group come up with some more creative ideas rather than something that has been done many times before.  I also think that planning is one of the most important factors to making a video so I think that this year as a group we will make a more detailed plan to our video so when it comes to shooting, we know exactly what we are doing.

Analysing Everything Everything’s promo image

The band are wearing flip-flops, shorts, t-shirts and sunglasses this gives us the impression that they are a classic/ stereotypical British band. The image as a whole shows that they are fun and easy going because of the beach theme, they appear to be dressed for the beach although the background is a field location, this suggests that they like to be individual and different from the average British person. By looking at the image you would at first think that the band’s genre was indie/pop and aimed at teenagers/ young adults.

Analysing a Music Video using Goodwins Theory
Everything Everything – MY KZ, UR BF
At the beginning of the video the lead singer is shown in pub where everything around him is frozen and only him being alive, in the lyrics he mentions ‘flash backs all the time’ Which shows that there is a connection between the lyrics and visuals. The connection between the visuals and music the cuts are always to the beat of the music, which makes it flow better for the viewer.

Keep Grow Change Homework

Music Video Evaluation

As a whole I feel that our Music Video was well edited and thought out and by the end of the task our final product looked professional. Our chosen music for our music video was Adele’s most famous song Someone Like You which was a massive hit throughout the UK. The reason why we chose to do this song for our music video is that we thought it would be successful and quite professional to do on the college grounds. The only down side of choosing this song was that the planning for the theme throughout the video itself wouldn’t be that imaginative as the song is about a break up and the woman still loving the man and wanting to stay with him. So the typical theme to choose would be a girl being upset about a break up. It was very difficult to put a twist on this especially as we only had a lesson to shoot all our footage and shoot it all during our media lesson in college.

The filming as a whole went pretty successfully, we used the white media to shoot the majority of our video, then we also shot some of it outside the caretakers office then finally some end shots were taken in the little woodland area. The most successful shots were the ones which were taken in the white room, they worked particularly well as there was no background noise and the lighting was good. When we did the shots outside the caretakers office this was more difficult as we couldn’t use the CD player for the timing of the music and there was a couple of people that could be seen in the background of our shots. Our least successful location was the woods, it is very close to a busy main road meaning it was difficult to hear Jade singing the song and to get the timing right, this effected the quality of our editing in this area.

The editing as a whole was successful, we only had a couple of lessons to complete all of our lip sinking, cutting all of our shots together and then linking the music in time. As we used a varied amount of locations this allowed us to cut them together to make the story flow well and make it still interesting. Lip sinking was easy for the first half of the editing but as soon as we were using the wood location shots it began to get more difficult, as we could here jade singing at all, it took a lot of time to get it as close as we could. As a whole I feel that the task was good, I feel that our group could have benefited with some better planning, and maybe a bit more time to shoot our video.

Keep Grow Change task.

We had to look at our music intro blog and video to see what we would keep grow and change. This was an individual task.

Research and Planning.
Keep: For our research and planning we looked into a music video which the year above had produced and analysed it so we could see what aspects they have included in terms of Goodwin. This would give us an idea as to what we need to include to make this a good video.
Grow: Something that we could have done a bit more of was researching into the artist whose song we were doing to get an idea of their style and maybe some inspiration for different ideas for the music video.
Change: If I were to do this task again I would do more research into the genre of ‘pop’ as this was the genre of our music video. This could’ve helped us understand better what we could’ve included into our video to make it better.
Filming.
Keep: Something we did quite well was the amount of different shot types in our music video. There were many different types, such as close ups, high and low angles, etc. This makes it more interesting to watch than something filmed all at the same distance or angle.
Grow: To add a bit more of an effect we could have added in some more angles, such as canted. This would have given it a slightly edgy look, making it a bit different from other videos. It would stand out amongst other music videos.
Change: If I were to do this task again I would shoot in different locations that would suit the genre more. Our locations were limited so we did have one that would fit the genre correctly in order to make the video fully successful.
Skills.
Keep: The skills that we use well were that of using the camera. After using the cameras for other tasks we were able to use the cameras very easily knowing how to use them properly.
Grow: Something that we could improve on is using different editing effects on final cut. This would’ve enhanced our video giving it a more stereo typical pop genre feel to it.
Change: If we were to do it again there aren’t any skills that would particularly benefit our music video. The skills we have were enough to make a decent music video.
Evaluation.
In total I am pleased with the music video we have managed to produce. It has fitted in well to Goodwins Theory of Analysis. There are only small things that could be done to improve our music video but there isn’t an obvious amount.

Re-Pitch for music video ideas

We were told to re-pitch for another song as our first song choice was popular with the group so three groups chose it is their first choice. We also had feedback that our idea was too narrative based, and people felt that this would be boring to watch. We therefore decided on the song We're from Barcelona - I'm from Barcelona as we felt that the idea we had for this was more original and would allow us to entertain our audience more.

Our ideas were to have it in a field location on a sunny day, using a large group of teenagers our age. We would be showing the teenagers having a picnic, starting a food fight, messing about and genuinely having fun. At one point one person would start singing to the song and the rest of the people will join in one by one. Marching to the location in a group and running/ rolling down the hill. A Plastic sheet with fairy liquid and people slide down. Paddling pool with beans, spaghetti, custard in it and face diving with snorkels and flippers. Throwing donuts into each-others mouths. Parachute thingy where people play with. Ice cream floats. Mentos and coke. Shake up champagne or fizzy drink. water pistols. Umbrellas? picnic blankets. water baloons with beans, eggs, flour.

Music Video Initial Ideas

Our first choice: Jack Johnson - Sitting, Waiting, Wishing

This song is the one that stood out to us the most for the soft and easy listening atmosphere that it gives. We feel that the ideas would be most creative and experimental approach to the music video task. We also feel that it allows us to experiment with some new ideas.

We would play the artist as a character busking in a very busy city, as the song is about a past relationship he would be reminiscing on the 'old times' and trying to take his mind off of it with the culture of a town area and by singing to pretty girls who pass by.

We would often switch to a flashback of the artist and his previous girlfriend together, using a documentary through their relationship. We would use footage from different locations and at different times.  We would do a range of flashbacks showing different emotions. At one point she would be in the apartment with her friends laughing and having a good time, he would be shown as isolated and would eventually walk out with his guitar in his hand without the girl realizing. We also had an idea of a flashback of the artist walking past the girl and he would be shown really eager and wanting to stop and speak where as she would be in a rush and just walk straight by him without a second look.

During the chorus when he sings about waiting on this girl, we would show a montage of the artist on a chair/sofa but changing different positions, for example moving from laying down to sitting up etc. This would be to show how long he was waiting and his uncomfortable emotions. This location would be at the characters house/apartment.

Location:
For the main part of the music video we will probably shoot the main character busking in either a London station or maybe in cambridge town. The second location that we will use is maybe the main characters house and different locations in the countryside.

Costumes:
The main character would be wearing casual clothing, probably jeans and a t-shirt, possibly a straw hat and some comfy shoes. This would give a laid back and casual feel which relates to the style and pace of the song.

The girlfriend would be wearing a pair of skinny jeans with a nice top and heels on, with her hair straightened to show a girl who is out of his league.

The other girl would be wearing more similar clothing to him, she would be wearing a loose top with some summery shorts and some flip flops, with loose curls in her long hair. This can link to the genre as it shows her wearing more relaxed clothing to suit both the artist and the genre of music he likes.

Our target audience will be young adults and teenagers, as the music is easy listening and quite chilled out. It wouldn't be that appropriate for a older target audience.

Our second choice: We're From Barcelona

For this idea we thought that a scene with a close group of friends having a picnic would be really fun and energetic like the genre, sound and feel of the music. The location would be a field

Everybody knows
